Why Can My Energy Rating Change? 7-Star Homes in Queensland Explained
By Kirsty & Brett Paterson, KIBA Built. Building custom homes across Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay since 2018.
Because your home’s rating is based on its final design. Colours, siting, windows and design changes can all move the result, and no one knows the final rating until your home is assessed.
What is the 7-star energy rating in Queensland?
Since 1 May 2024, every new home in Queensland has needed a 7-star energy rating. The rating looks at your home’s shell: the roof, walls, windows and floors, and how well they keep heat out or in. A compliant outdoor living area can earn credits towards the 7 stars, and a ceiling fan in that area earns more. Every KIBA home includes an alfresco ceiling fan as standard, which helps.
What can change my home’s energy rating?
Small choices add up:
- Colours. Darker roofs and walls absorb more heat than lighter ones.
- Siting. Which way your home faces on the block changes how much sun hits each side.
- Windows. Bigger windows, especially facing west, let in more heat.
- Design changes. Moving walls, adding windows or changing ceiling heights can all shift the result.
Will meeting 7 stars cost me extra?
It might. Your KIBA quote includes the 7-star rating as a basic allowance. If your final colours, siting or choices mean your home needs extra measures to meet the standard, like upgraded glazing or insulation, there may be an additional cost that’s outside our control.
How can I keep my energy rating on track?
- Think about colour with the climate in mind, especially for your roof.
- Ask us how window size and placement might affect your rating.
- Make design changes early, before your home is assessed.
The rules are the rules. Knowing what affects your rating just means you can make your choices with your eyes open.
